Volunteer at the Gravity Discovery Centre & Observatory
The Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory is a not for profit organisation that requires the help of volunteers to be able to run as smoothly as possible. If you’re looking for a meaningful way to contribute your time and are passionate about science, the GDC could be the place for you! There are a number of benefits to being a volunteer at the GDC including free stargazing, meals and the opportunity to be a part of a great organisation!
If you think you’d be a great asset to our volunteering team in any of the categories below, please download the volunteer form, fill it out and send it through to us and we’ll get back to you within a week of your submission. We hope to hear from you soon!
Shop Volunteer
Are you a gadget and space toy geek? We’re looking for a volunteer who has 5-10 hours to spare a month to take charge of our science centre shop! If you’ve never managed a shop before, that’s no problem – we’ll give you on the job training! Our shop is an integral part of our business and is stocked with astronomy, science and tourism related products.
The best part? You get to purchase shop items at cost price!
Maintenance
If you think that your skillset could help keep the GDC running and looking great, we’d love to hear from you! We’re always looking for people with a variety of skills when it comes to maintenance, whether that be cleaning, electrical, building or mechanical or anything else!
Administrative Support
If you’re looking to make a big difference behind the scenes, then administrative support is a great area to volunteer! We’ll train you on a variety of different jobs, from taking bookings for the science centre and the observatory, to processing invoices and making tour timetables (all within your comfort levels!).
Tour Guide
Are you passionate about communicating science to people? We run tours for a variety of different groups including schools, seniors, community groups and families and would need volunteers to be available for at least two shifts per month.
We aim to make our tours engaging and interactive and to get people who visit our centre as excited by science and astronomy as we are!
Observatory Guide
We’re looking for people who are passionate about astronomy and who are great communicators to volunteer at our observatory. We run tours every Friday and Saturday night and would need volunteers to be available for at least two of those per month. You will receive on the job training that will ultimately lead to you running a telescope for the evening and talking to our guests about targets we’re showing them.
